FINISHED PAPER
LAMINATES
Finished paper as the name implies, is fully cured or “finished” before being applied to the board.
This means that a number of resins may be used for the impregnation process, including both melamine & urea resins, depending on the wear resistance and flexibility required. (Some papers are capable of being formed around a 1mm radius!)
After impregnation the resins are completely cured and lacquers and other wear resistant coatings are applied.
The laminate is then bonded to the substrate with either PVAC, EVA or UF glues in a continuous rolling press.
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
FINISHED PAPER LAMINATES vs MELAMINE
The most common paper based laminate you will have seen is melamine. The difference between finished papers and melamine papers is in the impregnation process. Both laminates originate from the same raw paper and are impregnated with resins.
Melamine paper is impregnated with high quantities of melamine resin which is then partially cured.
When the paper is pressed onto the board at about 200°C, the melamine resin is re-activated and fuses the paper to the board.
